San Juan Islands

A Ferry Ride to the Islands

Getting to the San Juan Islands is half the fun when you take a ferry! Every time we are on one of these giant boats I’m amazed at the amount of cars and passengers that area piled on. Luckily, this return trip to the islands was in April so there typically isn’t a lot of visitor traffic that time of year. Better for us because we had the best views!

If you haven’t been to the islands via ferry, it’s vital you reserve your space in advance, especially if you’re traveling during peak summer season. The great thing is that most of the resorts on the islands will give you all the details to make sure you arrive safely!

I must add that we got into Anacortes a bit early for our ferry departure, so we had time to explore and stumbled upon a beautiful park just a couple of blocks from downtown. Built in the 1920s, Causland Memorial Park is listed with the National Register of Historic Places for its unique use of rocks and structures. A portion of the park is dedicated to Anacortes veterans from World War I to the Vietnam War. The decorative rock and mosaic made for unique walls and structures throughout the park, complete with a bandstand and amphitheater. And of course I can’t forget to mention the flowers. I’m still not sure what they all were, but certainly added to the beauty of this quaint park.

While it was a big blustery in April, we lucked out by having pretty good views on the ferry of the islands as we made our way to San Juan, the largest of the islands. Four of the islands you can actual travel to via ferry, which is minimal considering more than 400 islands make up that area and only 128 of them are named.

We were hopeful to see whales on the ferry, but no such luck on this trip. Our arrival to Friday Harbor was pure excitement for us. Of course for me, my first stop by Pelindaba Lavendar! San Juan Island is home to this beautiful lavendar farm and right in town you can stop and gather up all of their wonderful products. My favorite – well I can’t have just one favorite! – is the Lavendar Hot Chocolate and the Body Butter. And then there is the Lavendar Linen Water that I spray in our bedroom, soap for the bathroom, essential oils and the hubby’s favorite – Lavendar Shortbread.

Up next on our trip: our favorite resort tucked into the west side of San Juan Island.
